Redwood Field Condition Tiles
Through grasshopper and CNC fabrication, our group was able to study the properties of redwood. Various experiments determined how the qualities of wood cooperated (and didn’t) with digital fabrication. Final results demonstrated that the grain of the wood was a primary factor in CNC performance.
1_Points: A variation of holes ranging from shallow plunges to complete penetration.
2_Lines: Intersection of curves ranging in diameter following a path with and against the wood grain.
3_Polygons: Overlapping square profiles and pockets that explore different depths and intersections.
4_Surface: Form deriving from multiple sine curves with adjustable amplitude and period properties.
5_Double Surface: A follow-up iteration from the surface study testing the thickness of the material and eliminating a “back” to the panel.
