In experimenting with the capacities of both fiberglass and the CNC router, we immediately held our grasshopper definitions / rhino hybrid-surfaces accountable to the limits and flexibilities of fiberglass, which molds well to larger modules but responds less accurately to more pointilistic cast. The flexibility of fiberglass has allowed us to use the same module to explore variability in the number of resin / glass coats, opacity, mold attachment, pigment, and pocketing.
With four modules that all explore and push the materiality in a different direction, we’re understanding that fiberglass will allow us to find a great deal of variability within a standardized module when we continue to the final assembly process. More to come.
